Overview
VocoVision is recruiting an experienced Sign Language Interpreter to provide virtual interpreting services to students across New Mexico. This remote position offers the opportunity to support deaf and hard-of-hearing students while enjoying the benefits of a flexible work-from-home arrangement.
Position Details
- Location: Fully Remote (New Mexico-based)
- Employment Type: Full-time, 1099 Contract
- Work Schedule: Flexible within school hours, including time for indirect services
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Sign Language Interpreting, Deaf Education, or related field
- 4.0 EIPA score and passed EIPA Written Test (required for New Mexico)
- Active certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) preferred
- Minimum of 2 years of recent experience as a Sign Language Interpreter in educational settings
- Proficiency in delivering remote interpreting services and familiarity with online platforms like Zoom
- Strong American Sign Language (ASL) skills and comprehensive knowledge of Deaf culture
- Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities in both ASL and written English
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively in a virtual environment
- Cultural competence to serve New Mexico's diverse student population
Responsibilities
- Provide real-time sign language interpretation for deaf and hard-of-hearing students in virtual classroom settings
- Interpret educational content, discussions, and interactions between students, teachers, and staff
- Prepare for assignments by reviewing course materials and specialized vocabulary
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all interpreted information and adhere to the interpreter code of ethics
- Collaborate with teachers and special education staff to ensure effective communication and support for students
- Adapt interpreting techniques to optimize effectiveness in an online environment
- Participate in IEP meetings and contribute insights related to students' communication needs
- Stay informed about New Mexico Public Education Department requirements and advancements in sign language interpreting
- Provide culturally responsive services to New Mexico's diverse deaf and hard-of-hearing student population
- Adhere to all NMPED guidelines and regulations for educational interpreters
- Contribute to the implementation of support strategies for deaf and hard-of-hearing students within the Multi-Layered System of Supports (MLSS) framework
- Participate in professional development activities to maintain certification and stay current with best practices
