Overview
VocoVision is seeking a qualified Sign Language Interpreter to provide virtual interpreting services to students throughout South Carolina. This remote position offers an excellent opportunity to support deaf and hard-of-hearing students while enjoying a flexible work environment.
Position Details
- Location: Fully Remote (South Carolina-based)
- Contract Type: Full-time, 1099 Independent Contractor
- Schedule: Flexible within school hours, including time for indirect services
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Sign Language Interpreting, Deaf Education, or related field
- 3.5 EIPA score (required for South Carolina)
- Active certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) preferred
- Minimum of 2 years recent experience as a Sign Language Interpreter in educational settings
- Proficiency in delivering virtual interpreting services and familiarity with online platforms (e.g., Zoom)
- Strong American Sign Language (ASL) skills and understanding of Deaf culture
- Excellent communication abilities in both ASL and written English
- Capacity to work independently and collaborate effectively in a virtual team environment
- Cultural competence to serve South Carolina's diverse student population
Responsibilities
- Provide real-time sign language interpretation for deaf and hard-of-hearing students in virtual classroom settings
- Interpret educational content, discussions, and interactions between students, teachers, and staff
- Prepare for assignments by reviewing course materials and specialized vocabulary
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all interpreted information and adhere to the interpreter code of ethics
- Collaborate with teachers and special education staff to ensure effective communication and support for students
- Adapt interpreting techniques to optimize effectiveness in an online environment
- Participate in IEP meetings and contribute insights related to students' communication needs
- Stay informed about South Carolina Department of Education requirements and advancements in sign language interpreting
- Provide culturally responsive services to South Carolina's diverse deaf and hard-of-hearing student population
- Adhere to all SC Department of Education guidelines and regulations for educational interpreters
- Contribute to the implementation of support strategies for deaf and hard-of-hearing students within the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework
- Participate in professional development activities to maintain certification and stay current with best practices
