Virtual School Sign Language Interpreter


Location: Remote (Alabama-based)
Job Type: Full-Time Contract
Pay: $30+/Hour

Key Responsibilities:
Sign Language Interpretation:

• Provide real-time interpretation of spoken language into ASL and vice versa during virtual classes, meetings, and other educational activities.
• Ensure accurate and clear communication between students, teachers, and other educational staff.
• Interpret academic content, instructions, and discussions to facilitate understanding and participation for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

Student Support & Engagement:

• Foster an inclusive learning environment by ensuring that students with hearing impairments are actively engaged and able to follow along with class content.
• Address any communication barriers or issues promptly and effectively.
• Assist students in understanding and participating in both individual and group activities.

Collaboration & Communication:

• Work closely with teachers, administrators, and other support staff to ensure that the educational needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing students are met.
• Communicate regularly with students and their families to provide updates on their progress and address any concerns.
• Participate in virtual meetings and professional development opportunities as required.

Technical Management:

• Utilize and manage virtual communication platforms and tools effectively to deliver high-quality interpretation services.
• Troubleshoot technical issues related to video and audio settings to ensure clear and uninterrupted communication.

Documentation & Reporting:

• Maintain accurate records of interpretation sessions and provide feedback on student participation and progress as needed.
• Document any challenges or issues encountered during interpretation and work with relevant staff to resolve them.

Qualifications:

• Education: Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in American Sign Language, Deaf Education, or a related field; relevant certifications or training in sign language interpreting preferred.
• Certification: Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI)
• EIPA – 3.0+ and the Written portion
• Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience as a sign language interpreter, preferably in an educational or virtual setting.
