Virtual School Sign Language Interpreter
Location: Remote (Alabama-based)
Job Type: Full-Time Contract
Pay: $30+/Hour
Key Responsibilities:
Sign Language Interpretation:
- Provide real-time interpretation of spoken language into ASL and vice versa during virtual classes, meetings, and other educational activities.
- Ensure accurate and clear communication between students, teachers, and other educational staff.
- Interpret academic content, instructions, and discussions to facilitate understanding and participation for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
Student Support & Engagement:
- Foster an inclusive learning environment by ensuring that students with hearing impairments are actively engaged and able to follow along with class content.
- Address any communication barriers or issues promptly and effectively.
- Assist students in understanding and participating in both individual and group activities.
Collaboration & Communication:
- Work closely with teachers, administrators, and other support staff to ensure that the educational needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing students are met.
- Communicate regularly with students and their families to provide updates on their progress and address any concerns.
- Participate in virtual meetings and professional development opportunities as required.
Technical Management:
- Utilize and manage virtual communication platforms and tools effectively to deliver high-quality interpretation services.
- Troubleshoot technical issues related to video and audio settings to ensure clear and uninterrupted communication.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of interpretation sessions and provide feedback on student participation and progress as needed.
- Document any challenges or issues encountered during interpretation and work with relevant staff to resolve them.
Qualifications:
- Education: Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in American Sign Language, Deaf Education, or a related field; relevant certifications or training in sign language interpreting preferred.
- Certification: Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI)
- EIPA – 3.0+ and the Written portion
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience as a sign language interpreter, preferably in an educational or virtual setting.
