Position Overview

We are seeking a qualified and experienced Remote American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to provide interpreting services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in K12 school settings across Oregon. This fully remote role supports students' access to classroom instruction, school activities, and one-on-one services through secure virtual platforms. The ideal candidate will be fluent in ASL and English, familiar with educational terminology, and committed to fostering inclusive learning environments.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide real-time remote ASL interpretation for students during virtual or hybrid classroom instruction, related services, and extracurricular activities.

  • Interpret between students, teachers, staff, and peers to support full access to the general education curriculum.

  • Maintain professional boundaries and adhere to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.

  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, special education staff, and school interpreters to understand lesson plans, vocabulary, and student goals.

  • Adapt interpreting style to match the students language preferences, academic level, and developmental needs.

  • Facilitate clear and effective communication in a variety of school settings, including small groups, one-on-one instruction, and assemblies.

  • Participate in IEP meetings as needed and provide insight into communication access and student progress.

  • Document interpreting services and maintain required logs or reports in accordance with district guidelines.

  • Use appropriate educational technology tools to ensure high-quality, low-latency video interpretation.

  • Maintain confidentiality in compliance with FERPA and HIPAA guidelines.


Requirements

Credentials & Licensing

  • National certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) (e.g., NIC, CI/CT) or recognized equivalent.

  • Must meet Oregon Department of Education requirements for educational interpreters.

  • Associates or Bachelors degree in ASL interpreting, Deaf studies, or a related field preferred.

  • Valid background clearance to work in Oregon public schools.

Experience & Skills

  • Minimum of 2 years of interpreting experience in K12 or postsecondary educational settings.

  • Proficiency in English and ASL with the ability to interpret academic content across grade levels and subjects.

  • Familiarity with IEP processes and special education terminology.

  • Strong virtual communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Comfortable using video conferencing tools (e.g., Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams) and online learning platforms (e.g., Canvas, Seesaw, Google Classroom).

  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively while interpreting for multiple classes or students.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 4.0 or higher.

  • Experience with DeafBlind interpreting or cued speech.

  • Bilingual in written/spoken Spanish and English.

  • Knowledge of classroom accommodations and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles.
