Position Overview

We are seeking a qualified and experienced Remote American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to provide interpreting services for K12 students who are deaf or hard of hearing in Delaware public and charter school settings. This fully remote role ensures students have equitable access to instruction and school activities through secure virtual platforms. The ideal candidate will be fluent in ASL and English, familiar with educational interpreting standards, and committed to supporting inclusive learning environments.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide live, remote ASL interpretation for students during virtual or hybrid classroom instruction, related services (e.g., speech therapy), and extracurricular activities.

  • Facilitate clear, accurate communication between students, teachers, staff, and peers.

  • Collaborate with educators and support staff to understand lesson content, student goals, and instructional strategies.

  • Modify interpretation techniques based on the students age, language preferences, and academic level.

  • Support student participation in school meetings, assemblies, small groups, and one-on-one instruction.

  • Participate in IEP meetings as appropriate, offering insights on student communication access.

  • Maintain confidentiality in compliance with FERPA, HIPAA, and professional ethical standards.

  • Use educational technology platforms (e.g., Google Meet, Zoom, Schoology) effectively to deliver quality remote interpretation.

  • Document interpreting services as required by school or district protocols.


Requirements

Credentials & Licensing

  • National certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) (e.g., NIC, CI/CT) or equivalent certification.

  • Must reside in or be authorized to work in the state of Delaware.

  • Must meet or be willing to meet Delaware Department of Education qualifications for educational interpreters.

  • Associates or Bachelors degree in ASL interpreting, Deaf studies, or a related field preferred.

  • Must pass required background checks for employment in Delaware schools.

Experience & Skills

  • At least 2 years of interpreting experience in K12 or postsecondary educational environments.

  • Strong command of ASL and English, with the ability to interpret academic and instructional content.

  • Familiarity with IEP goals, accommodations, and special education terms.

  • Experience using video conferencing platforms and online classroom tools (e.g., Canvas, Google Classroom).

  • Excellent virtual communication, time management, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with school staff.


Preferred Qualifications

  • EIPA score of 4.0 or higher or RID Ed:K-12 certification.

  • Knowledge of Delaware education laws and interpreter standards.

  • Bilingual in written/spoken Spanish and English.
