Overview

According to ASHA’s 2024 Schools Survey, 26% of school-based respondents identified the shortage of speech language pathologists (SLPs) in their area as the greatest barrier to achieving manageable caseloads. To expand service capacity, many school districts rely on speech language pathology assistants (SLPAs) to support the delivery of speech therapy services. However, persistent SLP shortages can make it difficult to secure qualified supervisors, leading many school districts to utilize remote SLP supervisors. While remote supervision offers a practical solution, ensuring high quality supervision requires more than technology alone. Consistent training in student safety, ethical and regulatory responsibilities, scope of practice, and evidence-based intervention is essential to supporting quality service delivery and positive student outcomes. This webinar, “Supporting Clinical Excellence: Remote Supervision of SLPAs,” is designed for both SLPs and SLPAs. Participants will explore best practices for remote supervision, examine strategies for fostering clinical skill development through effective supervisory relationships, and discuss practical approaches to maintaining quality, compliance, and collaboration across distance.

What You'll Learn

After attending the webinar, participants will:

1. Describe the essential responsibilities, regulatory considerations and quality indicators that support effective remote supervision of SLPAs.

2. Differentiate supervisory practices that promote clinical skill development, quality service delivery and compliance from those that introduce risk in remote supervision.

3. Apply practical strategies for implementing effective remote supervision through communication, observation, feedback and documentation.

There is no fee to participate in the course. Attendees have the opportunity to earn 0.1 ASHA CEUs or 1 hour of Professional Development Hours (PDH). The course is being offered through an ASHA approved CEU provider, Soliant Health. We will report the course to the ASHA registry, if you attended the course in full, are a current ASHA member and provide us with your ASHA number and complete the self-assessment and survey at the end of the webinar. Your participation in this course will be submitted to the ASHA CE Registry within 3 weeks after the course has ended. You must attend the course for the full hour to receive credit, there is no partial credit.

Melissa is the Managing Director of Clinical Services at VocoVision. She is a bilingual speech-language pathologist who has worked with culturally and linguistically diverse school-age children with various communication disorders. Melissa received her B.A. from Michigan State University and M.A. from the University of Texas at Austin. Melissa is an affiliate of ASHA’s Special Interest Group 14-Cultural and Linguistic Diversity, Group 18-Telepractice and a member of ASHA’s Hispanic Caucus.
