Top Traits it Takes to Be a Teletherapist
Teletherapy is an up and coming option for many future and current therapists. While being a teletherapist may seem like a great alternative to a lot of people, it is not for everyone. The reality is that working at home means that certain traits will help you to be more successful. If you fall into these categories, then teletherapy may be for you!
Self Motivation
Working from home may sound wonderful, but you need to be able to separate your work responsibilities when you have sessions. This means that when you are working, you can not allow yourself to be distracted by family members, chores, or other things that may be in your home. You also must be able to keep your own schedule and stick to it. Since no other individual will be by your side, it is imperative that you are able to prepare for sessions ahead of time, complete reporting, and other tasks related to your teletherapist job.
Organized
As a teletherapist your workload is decided by you. If you don’t feel that you are able to take on another therapy session during a time, you do not have to do it. This also means that being organized is imperative. When you see one patient, you need to make sure that you are focused, have exactly what you need, and set everything up to go smoothly. If you have a system in place with areas on your computer for each client, it will help to keep the time as productive as possible.
Comfortable with Technology
Since you will be using technology as a teletherapist, you must be comfortable with it. While you do not have to be an expert, it’s important to understand what hardware and software will be required. Do you know how to adjust your audio in case someone can’t hear you properly during a session? Being able to troubleshoot as you go is important so you make the most of the time you have with each session.
Flexibility
When you work as a teletherapist, one perk is being able to make your own schedule. You can work with people near and far and set your own hours. At the same time, you also have to be flexible if something comes up. If a student is unable to meet with you online one evening because of a family commitment, you need to be willing to reschedule in a timely manner. It’s often a give and take.
Social
Since you will not be meeting with individuals in person, you need to be able to connect with them. Being social and connecting with them is important. It helps to be open, honest, and friendly. If they see that you care about them, they will be more receptive to the therapy work presented during your session.
